Hair Weaving

We have an amazing collection of jewelry at the mall. I have seen some wonderful things float through here over the years. I love Victorian woven hair jewelry myself. Yes, human hair. Oh those Victorians.

Hairweaving became very popular during the Civil War. When loved ones were departed to war and other mortal ends. One can often find them under crystal in a brooch, if it has a black border it is most likely a mourning piece. I have seen several watch fob hair pieces which means women were probably more likely to take part in this unique craft. What a great art for the poor. All you need is hair and time. I did see a hairweaving kit once in here. There was a type of sticky stuff to put the hair on so one could plait it.

The large hair weavings in frames were probably done on wire. They often contain different color hair.  All the children's hair? Hopefully all still living during the execution of the piece. This piece above looks like it has the whole family's hair in it.
