We do, really love old stuff.....
On being an antiques dealer....
No one says as a child, "I'm growing up to be an antiques dealer, mom".
Something happens that peaks your interest. Objects can offer up more than history books. Thats when you start to collect.
I have some amazing collections: Feast of Lanterns, Pacific Grove, CA, Chinese lanterns, and Christmas tragedy. Recently I have started a collection of photos of women dressing like men in the early 1900's. It was a thing....
yes, they are women
Being an antiques dealer is a ticket into a world you never would have suspected. A secret world in many ways.
Who else but an antiquarian would know the difference between celluloid and bakelite, the purpose of a porringer, or why woodblock prints are made on thin panels and wood engravings are made on wood blocks?
Collecting starts one on the path of antiquing and then, we never look back. I know of no antiques dealer who stopped loving antiques.
Objects from the past reveal hidden secrets about our world no history book could tell you about. You might be able to read all about Teddy Roosevelt, but you would never read about the three legged boy whose photo I found while antiquing.
